Last day to drop a class…

October 30, 2008

Is Friday, October 31.  Also known as All Hallows Eve, aka Halloween.  It is the night before the “All Hallows,” also called, “All Hallowmas,” or “All Saints,” or “All Souls’ Day,” observed on November 1.  This day is to celebrate all of those who have gone before us.  Mexicans celebrate El Día de los Muertos — the Day of the Dead — on November 1.  They too celebrate the memories of those who have passed away.

So, of course this is great day for students to lay to rest – drop, those classes in which they have no chance in passing.  On November 1, they can remember and celebrate all the good times they had in those classes.  And they can look forward to finishing the semester strong and being academically successful.

If you need any assistance dropping a class or have any questions please contact Academic Advising & Retention, (859) 622-2276.

Happy Halloween!

The ‘O’ flag

October 18, 2008

Bob Grant, on his nationally syndicated radio show on October 15 had this to say:

“What is that flag that Obama’s been standing in front of that looks like an American flag, but instead of having the field of 50 stars representing the 50 states, there’s a circle?” He then said: “Is the circle the ‘O’ for Obama? Is that what it is?” Grant later said: “[D]id you notice Obama is not content with just having several American flags, plain old American flags with the 50 states represented by 50 stars? He has the ‘O’ flag. And that’s what that ‘O’ is. That’s what that ‘O’ is. Just like he did with the plane he was using. He had the flag painted over, and the ‘O’ for Obama. Now, these are symptom — these things are symptomatic of a person who would like to be a potentate — a dictator.”

Seriously Bob…wtf?

That is the Ohio flag Bob.  Get with the program.

This past week I was in Springfield, Missouri attending the HighEdWeb 2008 conference.  While I was away, Eastern has had 4 fires.  Fortunately, no one has been seriously injured.  Richmond firefighters have responded to extinguish 4 fires, 3 in Dupree Hall and 1 in the Powell Student Center.  A roll of toilet paper was ignited and thrown down the trash chute in Dupree.  Another fire was started in the stairwell by lighting a stack of phone books.  This has got to stop.  This type of behavior will not be tolerated.

The University is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the individual(s) responsible.  The intentional fires appear to be related, however no official link has been established.

Anyone with information should call (859) 622-2821.

Springfield, Missouri

October 4, 2008

I will be traveling to Springfield, Missouri this week for the 2008 HighEdWeb conference.  I have never been to Springfield, MO nor to a Web conference.  I am excited about both.  The conference will be held on Missouri State University’s campus.  I will be staying at the University Plaza Hotel.

Did you know that nearly 50 percent of the U.S. population lives within a 50 mile radius of Springfield?  Springfield is Missouri’s third largest city, with a population of 154,777.  It is known as “The Queen City” and the “Birthplace of Route 66.”  Springfield is also the home to Bass Pro Shops Headquarters.  Check out key locations in Springfield with google maps.

HighEdWeb will have a twitter back channel using the hashtag #heweb08.  HighEdWeb is also on ning, facebook, flickr, twitter and del.icio.us.  Speaking of Web 2.0, Springfield is also on myspace.

EKU Reads

October 2, 2008

Ron Suskind will be visiting Eastern Kentucky University today.  He will be talking about his book, A Hope in the Unseen.  The book was chosen as this year’s EKU Reads book for all new freshman.  The program gives the students a common academic introduction to EKU.  First Year Programs brings the author of the selected EKU Reads book to campus to talk about his/her work.  The author provides insight to the students on the reasons they wrote the piece and what the book was all about.

A Hope in the Unseen, is about Cedric Jennings, a honor student at a inner-city high school who goes on to college at Brown University, an Ivy League school.   He faces many intellectual and social challenges, even at college, trying to fit in with the white and privileged students.  Cedric relies on his faith, support from his mother, intellect and determination to help him persevere.

Ron Suskind is also the author of The Price of Loyalty, George W. Bush, the White House and the Education of Paul O’Neill; The One Percent Doctrine; and The Way of the World. Eastern is fortunate, Mr. Suskind will talk about A Hope in the Unseen at 3:30 pm and The One Percent Doctrine, at 7:30 pm on Thursday, October 2.
