EKU OVC Champs
November 22, 2008
EKU beat UT Martin 33-31 to capture their 20th OVC title. EKU blocked a 45 yard FG with seconds remaining to hold on for the win. The Colonels are now 19-0 against the Skyhawks. Eastern scored 24 points to start the game off of 4 Martin turnovers. The second half was a different story as the Colonels’ offense sputtered and the Skyhawks could not be stopped. EKU was able to hang on and win, clinching it with the blocked field goal. The Colonels finished the year with a turnover margin of +16. Last year the defense had a turnover margin of +22.

A tie…
November 21, 2008
I spent close to 4 hours watching a catastrophe take place right before my eyes. Philadelphia Eagles v. Cincinnati Bengals. What a debacle. I should have just stayed home. Nope. I had to get there at 11:30 in 30 degree temperatures and tailgate. I had to sit up in the second to last row for the first quarter and fend off the bone chilling winds. I had to move down to some really decent seats but listen to the cheers of some Eagle fans. Why did I do this? Why did I have to witness the Bengals give up 8 sacks? Why didn’t Coach Marvin Lewis challenge the touchdown? Why can’t the Bengals score on 3 attempts from the 1 foot line? Why did I have to watch Philly attempt to pass the ball on all 18 third-down plays, including 3 of them when it was third and one? They failed on each of those 3 and converted on only 3 all game. Why did Shane Graham miss a 47 yard field goal with seconds remaining? To witness a tie. On the Bengals last possession in OT, before the roughing the passer call and a little over a minute to play, I thought the Bengals were going to take a knee and just play for the tie. At least they can say they didn’t lose.
Wow. That is all I can say. Truly impressive performance.

It was the first tie since November 10, 2002 when the Falcons and Steelers tied 34-34.

Remember…remember the fifth of november
November 4, 2008
-
- “Remember, remember the Fifth of November,
- The Gunpowder Treason and Plot,
- I see no reason
- Why the Gunpowder Treason
- Should ever be forgot.
- Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes, t’was his intent
- To blow up the King and Parli’ment.
- Three-score barrels of powder below
- To prove old England’s overthrow;
- By God’s providence he was catch’d
- With a dark lantern and burning match.
- Holloa boys, holloa boys, let the bells ring.
- Holloa boys, holloa boys, God save the King!”
In 1605, Guy Fawkes and 12 other conspirators had a plan to blow up the Houses of Parliament, in London, England, with 36 barrels of gunpowder. The plan was thwarted by authorities on November 5. Fawkes was caught in the cellar of Parliament with the gunpowder. He was tortured and executed. Since then, the night has been known as Bonfire Night. It is celebrated with fireworks and burning effigies of Guy Fawkes on a bonfire.
Queen Elizabeth I and her successor, James I, persecuted English Catholics. The group of 13, believed violent action was necessary. This is when they developed the Gunpowder Plot.
In the 2006 movie, V for Vendetta, the Gunpowder Plot serves as the historical inspiration to the film.
