This past week, Eastern Kentucky University’s public profile saw its largest increase in the number of fans since it went public.  The highlight feature and new feed to include updates from fan pages I believe are the reasons for the big jump.   528 new fans over a three day period; April 13 – April 15 (see chart below).

Check out EKU facebook here.  Has anyone else seen a spike in the number of fans of their University/College public profile?

Ice Storm ‘09

February 10, 2009

The Commonwealth of Kentucky was hit hard on January 27. The Ice Storm of ‘09 caused over 1 million houses to lose power. Over 700,000 homes in Kentucky had no power, including my home. We had no power for 95 hours. We spent most of our days at EKU, however we still braved the cold temperatures (mid 30s) in the house at night. We tried to make the best out of the situation. We will never take electricity for granted again. It was real eerie hearing the tree limbs snapping constantly throughout the night. “The Campus Beautiful” looked like it was attacked. Transformers were going out, looking like bombs going off. All the trees on campus had some type of damage.

EKU OVC Champs

November 22, 2008

EKU beat UT Martin 33-31 to capture their 20th OVC title.  EKU blocked a 45 yard FG with seconds remaining to hold on for the win.   The Colonels are now 19-0 against the Skyhawks.   Eastern scored 24 points to start the game off of 4 Martin turnovers.  The second half was a different story as the Colonels’ offense sputtered and the Skyhawks could not be stopped.  EKU was able to hang on and win, clinching it with the blocked field goal.  The Colonels finished the year with a turnover margin of +16.  Last year the defense had a turnover margin of +22.

This past week I was in Springfield, Missouri attending the HighEdWeb 2008 conference.  While I was away, Eastern has had 4 fires.  Fortunately, no one has been seriously injured.  Richmond firefighters have responded to extinguish 4 fires, 3 in Dupree Hall and 1 in the Powell Student Center.  A roll of toilet paper was ignited and thrown down the trash chute in Dupree.  Another fire was started in the stairwell by lighting a stack of phone books.  This has got to stop.  This type of behavior will not be tolerated.

The University is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the individual(s) responsible.  The intentional fires appear to be related, however no official link has been established.

Anyone with information should call (859) 622-2821.
