EKU OVC Champs

November 22, 2008

EKU beat UT Martin 33-31 to capture their 20th OVC title.  EKU blocked a 45 yard FG with seconds remaining to hold on for the win.   The Colonels are now 19-0 against the Skyhawks.   Eastern scored 24 points to start the game off of 4 Martin turnovers.  The second half was a different story as the Colonels’ offense sputtered and the Skyhawks could not be stopped.  EKU was able to hang on and win, clinching it with the blocked field goal.  The Colonels finished the year with a turnover margin of +16.  Last year the defense had a turnover margin of +22.

The Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) 16 team playoff begins next Saturday, November 29.  The Colonels will find out who they play tomorrow during the NCAA FCS playoff selection show.

Friedrich from Evanston, Illinois, was named Second-Team All-American by Collegiate Baseball. He also earned the 2008 OVC Pitcher of the Year. Friedrich dominated batters this year ranking second in the nation in ERA (1.43) and hits per nine innings (4.41) for the Colonels of Eastern Kentucky.

“Before the season, Friedrich was named a preseason first team All-American by Baseball America. He is also a finalist for several national player of the year awards, including the Brooks Wallace and Roger Clemens Awards, as well as the Golden Spikes and Dick Howser awards.” – ovcsports.com

Friedrich is expected to be a first round draft pick. I hope the Reds pick him up at the 7 spot.

**Update** Friedrich was the 25th pick by the Colorado Rockies.
